Thanks Sally, it was probably the same edition I had to defend! I'm always telling people to travel to Burma, and if they do, to allow a few weeks. It takes a while to get around and the best places take a bit longer to get to. While Rangoon and Mandalay are worthwhile, it's the small towns (like Hsipaw and Kalaw in Shan State) which I enjoyed the most.

Great post Carly. My first editing job at Lonely Planet was the Burma book and it was an eye-opener. I can only imagine how incredible it would be to travel there. One day, I hope.

Salut Sarah, we are doing pretty well. Our little girl is saying quite a few words now and copying a lot. I'd say almost half of this is in French, which is rewarding for me. The challenge is exposing her to more real people speaking to her in French. We have the music, the DVDs and books but it's ONLY me talking 'live' to her in French. So we will try out a French speaking playgroup on the other side of town in next few weeks. I'm also a little nervous about how things will go when she is speaking more words as my French will need to improve to keep up with her...!

Salut Carly! Just curious to hear about what kind of progress you and your daughter have made in the past six months....I know it's hard to add anything new into the mix when you're working during the day and taking care of a toddler's needs the rest of the time.

Thanks Marg. I think you've hit the nail on the head regarding the maid debate being exactly what it is because they are entering our personal space. It's particularly stark because home helpers are typically 'engaging' with affluence despite having very contrasting circumstances themselves.

Hi Carly, loved this post, we two debated for a long time about employing cleaners and I have often had the discussion with Em about her experience of being in Asian countries and employing maids... I love the way you raise the issue of rights and from what I have learned from Em, the overseas based maid is often the only source of income for the family and consciantious employers do far more that pay their wages.

In the end, as an aging worker I find it easier to get someone in once a fortnight to do those things that take up time like vacuuming. We did have alovley women fromColombia who involved her firends in her 'business' and her business enabled her to buy a house and support her children. Now we have an older Italian couple who are retired and developed their business as a way of sustaining themselves in their retirement....

However I do still feel little niggles of guilt about expecting someone else to domy 'dirty work' yet I dont mind doing that when soemone else washes my dishes or cooks for me when I go out, ot cuts my hair, or does themyriad of other things I pay for because I don't want to do it myself. I wonder with cleaners whether it is something about them coming into out private space?

Thanks Alvin. It's a Malay curry, and as you can tell, I highly recommend Bijan for a great, and romantic, night out. It's on Ceylon Rd. You should book first though. We had to wait, bit well worth it.
